What is Precision Measurement?

Precision and accuracy are two measurements of error. Precision is the degree in which repeated measurements under the same conditions provide the same results. Accuracy refers to how close a measurement is to the true or acceptable value.

Multiple measurements are needed in order to comment about precision.

A good analogy for understanding the difference between analogy and precision is to think of a soccer player kicking a ball at a goal.

If the player kicks with accuracy, her aim will always result with the ball close to or in the goal. If she kicks with precision, her aim will always take the ball to the same location, which may or may not be close to the goal. A great soccer player will be both accurate and precise by kicking the ball the same way each time and making it into the goal every time.

What Determines the Precision of a Measurement?

The precision of a measurement will depend highly on the instrument used and its least count. Measurements with smaller least count are considered more precise.
